5 favorites: summer shoes

linking up with Rachel for some Five Favorites.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks about new shoes in the spring. I've been thinking a lot about new shoes lately. And as we are about to be unemployed and Alex a full time student, naturally I'm thinking about very expensive shoes.

Here's my list of favorite shoes that I will probably never own.

//1//

Why do I always like the expensive shoes? I saw some Swedish Hasbeens on Camp Patton a while ago and thought, gee those look nice. Then I went to look for some on Amazon and of course, they're wicked expensive. But, a girl can dream, right?

//2//

Saltwater Sandals. I got Johnny these sandals last summer and they were great but now they're getting too small! He needs new ones and I wouldn't mind a pair for myself!

//3//

Danskos. Another expensive shoe that Dwija from House Unseen swears are worth every dollar.  I fell in love with these particular sandals, so they'll be sitting on my wishlist for a while.

//4//

Toms are another shoe that I have always wanted but that Johnny got first.  He's been rocking some gray Toms all spring and Alex and I are seriously considering using some of our tax return to get our own.

//5//

Everyone should have a pair of Birkenstocks. I myself have never had a pair of Birkenstocks but someday I would love some. And I would love some for Alex as well.  Not these ones. He can get the more masculine looking sandals.

And there you have it! All the pretty things that are currently on my radar.

5 favorite sugar free treats

linking up with Jenna at Call Her Happy

//

Some of you may already know that I gave up sugar for the month of January, and this post is proof that I lived to tell about it. I eat way too much sugar, and after the sugar overload the holidays, baked goods and treats from piano students and stocking-stuffers I just felt gross. I knew I needed to take a little break from the sweets and learn to realign my cravings.  It was hard, it was painful, I had some nasty headaches and was crabbier than usual the first couple days.(ok, the whole month.) I may have cheated on the weekends (oops), but eventually I did get used to not eating sweets all day long. And, surprise, surprise, I feel way better because of it.

I didn't give up ALL sugars. I still ate fruit and dairy and other foods that contain naturally occurring sugars. I really just gave up desserts, sweets and treats. Because I wasn't eating my usual copious amounts of chocolate, scones and ice cream everyday I had to come up with some new favorite snacks and treats. And here they are.

1. Dates and other dried fruit. I love dates all the time. But when I'm not eating sweets dates become the most wonderful delicious after dinner treat in the world. Also good are dried cherries and apricots. That's what I used to treat my withdrawal headaches. Be careful though, some dried fruit has sugar added to it. Check labels!

2. This tea:

It's a decaffeinated black tea with vanilla in it. So it smells sweet but doesn't actually have any sugar. I put some cream in mine and it's almost (actually not really) like having a cup of hot chocolate at the end of the day.

3. Plain yogurt with fresh fruit and my favorite granola recipe

4. Cashews. Five weeks ago you would not have found any nuts on my list of treats. But cashews are actually a pretty sweet nut.  They're good and filling too, so they really help satisfy cravings.

5. Toast with this jam.

This jam is totally sugar free. It's so good. And eating toast with jam and a cup tea just feels so good and British. Amiright?

So, there you have it. Now it's February. Praise the Lord! I'm still going to try to take it easy on the sweets, especially during the week. But I did make this cake from The Pioneer Woman for a Super Bowl party we went to and have been happily eating the left overs all week.

Who else is cutting back on sugar? What have you been snacking on?

// 5 Christmas Albums That Don't Stink (not even a little bit) //

linking up with Call Her Happy for 5 Favorites

//

I know that the stores and radio stations have been playing Christmas music for a while now. I even heard a report from someone that they heard Christmas music playing in some big store the day after Halloween! Way too early, people. And to make a bad thing even worse, the kind of Christmas music we're hearing for all of November is the most insipid, watered-down, and mind-numbing Christmas music that exists.  Why are we still listening to Johnny Mathis sing "It's Beginning To Look  A Lot Like Christmas?" Haven't we had enough?

We are just beginning to listen to Christmas Music in our home. When it comes to Christmas music not just any radio or Pandora station will do. I am picky. So when I say I like a Christmas album you know it had passed a great deal of scrutiny. Here are my very favorite Christmas albums. Hopefully they will help you out of any musical ruts you may have  fallen into. These never get old. Put them all together for a truly diverse and interesting Christmas playlist.

Harry Connick Jr.: When My Heart Finds Christmas

Do you know who Harry Connick Jr is? If you don't, prepare to swoon. This guy is the Frank Sinatra of our day, a true and dreamy crooner, who also is an incredible jazz pianist and writes a lot of his own music too! This album has been a favorite in my family for at least 10 year. It's full of fun big band arrangements, swinging beats, squealing trumpets, impressive piano solos, and there's a few tender moments tucked in there as well.

//2//

I first heard this album a couple years ago when I was working at our local trendy gift shop over Christmas, and it is delightful.  Tons of familiar carols done with 1940's style harmonies that will remind you of the Andrew Sisters. Put this one on for you holiday cocktail parties and you will instantly feel retro and classy.

Because, who doesn't love Zoey Deschanel? Well, Alex is not too keen on her, but this is my blog, not his. Zoey Deschanel, of being quirky and having great bangs fame, teams up with M. Ward to create a duo that is equal parts hipster, folksie, and indie, with a dash of class and nostalgia. This album makes a great accompaniment to your dinner party, or your quiet evening curled up writing Chirstmas cards.

Christmas: the only time of the year that a capella music is acceptable.  Alex and I have been fans of Pantatonix ever since they were hailed The Sing Off champions of 2011. We were a little sore that Afro Blue didn't win (they should really put out a Christmas album) but we have definitely made room in our hearts for Pentatonix as well. I know a capella can be a little cheesy and it's not for everyone. But I encourage you to give these guys a chance.  Every single member of this group has got some mad vocal skillz. Even the beat boxer. And OMG. I just saw that they are coming to Minneapolis in March.  Date night, honey?

//5//

The Dale Warland Singers (now just called The Singers) are my favorite choral group ever. Hands down. They are from the Twin Cities, but have been acclaimed on a national level. Lux Arumque is not specifically a Christmas album, though many of these sacred choral works are very fitting for the Advent and Christmas seasons. I love choral music at Christmas time. I don't think there is anything more reverent or divine than the sound of voices. It's the perfect way to quiet your heart and prepare it to receive Jesus.

And so I will leave you with this song, my favorite off of that album: O Magnum Mysterium

O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
Christ the Lord.
Alleluia!

(are you crying yet?)

//five fashion favorites//

I'm not much of a fashionista. And I usually try not to do that much shopping.  In fact, my new years resolution for this year was to do NO clothes shopping for all of 2014 (barring any emergency needs, nursing bras, things of that nature). Well, I think I lasted until about March before I broke down and bought something.

I'm going to blame my postpartum body.  The plain and simple fact is a lot of my old clothes just no longer fit me right. Even after I lost my baby weight, my body is just different now. I needed clothes that would fit my forever expanded hips and rib cage. And having the saggy, stretchy, lumpiness of a postpartum body, it just feels really good to look put together once in a while. When you're over tired and touched out, having a clean, presentable outfit and some lipstick on can do wonders for personal morale.

This fall I came across a few really good fashion finds that I love and that have become major staples in my mommy wardrobe. And so I give you my five fashion favorites. (The photos that are not mine link back to the websites they are from)

//1. printed leggings//

At first I thought only teenagers could pull them off.  But now I'm convinced they were invented for the stay at home mom.  Because what's more comfortable than leggings? Nothing. And with a fun pattern you can feel a little more stylish and put together than you would in just plain black yoga pants. White plum has an amazing selection of printed leggings. I think I'm addicted.

//2. tunics//

actual model from white plum's website.
me attempting to model my leggings and over sized sweater.

If you're going to wear leggings then you need to invest in a couple of tunics. I am 100% on board with the mantra of "leggings are not pants." So if you're going to wear them you need something that covers the old behind.  I love love love this tunic, also from white plum. And I also recently found these nice long layering tunics at Target. Great for wearing under something that maybe is not quite long enough to be presentable with leggings. Big, over-sized sweaters also work great with leggings. And wearing a long, flowing tunic helps hide the postpartum tummy troubles none of us like to show off.

//3. oxfords//

 I think it was after watching Call the Midwife that I decided I needed to get myself a pair of oxfords. They're so timeless, they can look vintage or modern. They're always in style, they work with jeans, and they work with dresses. I just found mine on Amazon and I love them. The only problem is our early Minnesota snow has me reaching for boots more than flats these days. Come springtime, however, I will be sporting my oxfords!

//4. this lipstick//

So, I shamelessly copied my little sister with this lipstick. She is a hairstylist by trade and very knowledgeable about all things trendy, and I shamelessly copy her on many occasions. I loved this lip color on her and after a failed attempt at commandeering it from her purse I had to go out and get one of my own.  Lipstick it like a magic pick-me-up, no matter how tired and frumpy I am feeling, if I put on some lipstick I instantly feel fancy!

//5. lily jade diaper bag//

This one is a real splurge and I realize most of us just can't go out and get one. I had heard about Lily Jade bags back in the spring from fashionable mommy bloggers such as Grace from Camp Patton. It's a diaper bag, but it's also a designer bag. It has this great insert that keeps all your baby stuff organized, it's nice and big, and it's beautiful to look at.  Then my good friend Jacqui got one for her birthday, and after seeing  one in the flesh I knew I would loath and despise any other diaper bag for the rest of my life until I got one. So Alex was a real champ and organized the families to go in on one for me. And I love it! I've tried three other diaper bags and this one holds the most stuff and stays organized the best. I usually carry around 2 cloth diapers, 1 extra cover, wipes, wet bag, butt paste, my sling, a book, toy and snack for Johnny, my wallet, water bottle, sippy cup, lipstick, gum, cellphone, and sometimes a knitting project or camera. And it ALL fits! And it's so pretty. And I love it.
